PLATO

(Palliative Learning and Action Together)

Plato aims to improve the palliative care services offered to some of the most disadvantaged people in South Africa, Argentina and the UK by strengthening the education and training for professionals and community-based workers.

Teams from the three countries are collaborating to develop, pilot and evaluate:

  • a 'training of trainers' course specifically designed for palliative care professionals
  • robust systems to support less formally trained personnel, including domiciliary care-givers and voluntary bereavement workers
  • a rights-based approach to disability and rehabilitation in palliative care
  • evaluation tools for palliative care education programmes

The PLATO partners, Pallium Latinoamerica, Argetina, Hospice for Palliative Care, South Africa and Sir Michael Sobell House, UK are internationally recognised NGOs actively involved in patient care, research and education and members of the World Wide Alliance for Palliative Care.

Beneficiaries include palliative care educators, health and social care professionals, domiciliary care-givers and volunteers in the three countries.

Outcomes will be disseminated internationally.

Project lead - Katy Newell Jones.
